. CHILD LABOUR
Children are always compared to flowers and butterflies because of their common virtues like innocence, freshness and tension-free lifestyle. They are future pillars of the nation. However, across the world, millions of children are forced to work because of their poor living conditions. The owners where the children are employed get excess work from them and give them low salary. They are easily abused by their employers.
The International Labour Organisation (ILO) estimated that there were 218million working children aged between 5 and 17 in the year 2006. Asia alone accounts for nearly 61% of child labours. Children are put into a mechanical way of life. Illiteracy among their parents is a major cause for child labour. As the child labourers already away from their parents, the long for love and affection.
This child labour can be eliminated by improving school facilities, literacy rate and by strengthening the legal system of the country. In all the civilized societies all over the world ‘child labour‘ is condemned as a social evil.
It is noticed that in recent times the society is showing some signs of awareness. Several social service organisations also join their hands with the government to take steps to eradicate child labour. Government should pay more attention to eradicate child labour by enforcing laws to protect children and provide them a pleasant childhood.
There are many laws against child labour, however their poor implementation is responsible for the continuation of child labour. Unless the government deals with the offenders with the iron hand, this problem is going to spoil the lives of millions of people. Let us join our hands with the government and sweep this practice out of existence.
