POPULATION EXPLOSION

POPULATION   EXPLOSION
The enormous increase in the population is called population explosion. Population explosion is one of the major problems that all the developing countries face. World population has already exceeded 6 billion in 2000. According to a report by the United Nations Population Fund, the total population is likely to reach 10 billion by 2025. Though India ranks second in population, it has the highest density of population in the world. India‘s population is growing at an alarming rate. India alone has a population of more than one billion, inspite of the fact that India is the first country in the world to have a population policy.
There are several factors that contribute to high growth rate of population. In today’s world, the death rate has decreased to such an extent that it creates a rapid increase in the population in many countries. This was achieved by improved nutrition, sanitation and medical care.
Over population creates many problems like lack of adequate food, water, shelter, education and employment. It leads to depletion of natural resources, increases the level of pollution, deforestation and loss of ecosystems, changes in atmospheric composition, global warming etc. It destroys our environment, lowers our standard of living, and generally degrades our quality of life. It allows poverty to persist. In fact there is a fear that over population will bring the extinction of the human race.
Only advancement in educational system can bring awareness among people about the population growth. Population education should be a subject for study in schools and colleges to develop the awareness of the population problems. Action plans and strategies can be developed to increase public understanding of how rapid population growth limits our basic needs. The urgent need of the hour is family planning. At present, the central and the state governments are implementing many family welfare schemes to control population growth.
The ‘human race’ should work together to protect our planet and necessary resources. World poverty can be reduced only if population growth is brought under control. Failure to control further increase of population will definitely lead to disastrous effects.
“ IF UNCHECKED, POPULATION WOULD GROW IN GEOMETRIC PROGRESSION
WHILE FOOD PRODUCTION COULD ONLY GROW IN ARITHMETIC PROGRESSION. “
